Review: Lay Windermere's Fan
It is fun, for all the melodramatic seriousness of the tale, and Wilde's banked-down fury at the hypocrisy of his time.
theatreCat, 26th January 2018Jennifer Saunders is absolutely fabulous
n her first appearance in the West End for 25 years, the scene-stealing Jennifer Saunders has a ball as the domineering Duchess of Berwick.
Neil Dowden, Londonist, 26th January 2018Review: Lay Windermere's Fan (Vaudeville Theatre)
Following on from the very dated A Woman of No Importance, the second instalment in the Vaudeville Theatre's Oscar Wilde season sees Kathy Burke take the reigns as she directs an all-star cast for Lady Windermere's Fan. But just like its predecessor, despite some great performances, it all just feels a bit too old hat.
West End Wilma, 25th January 2018Lady Windermere's Fan review
Jennifer Saunders looks at times as though she is taking part in a Comic Relief sketch and some people may think that there are traits in her portrayal - the goggling deadpans; the lines that leak through scarcely parted lips - that are too trademark for comfort. But I was delighted to find it's mostly true to the role.
Paul Taylor, The Independent, 24th January 2018Review: Lady Windermere's Fan
Jennifer Saunders stars in Kathy Burke's production of the comedy classic.
Sarah Crompton, What's On Stage, 23rd January 2018Lady Windermere's Fan review
Jennifer Saunders gets laughs, but Kathy Burke's lamentable production misses the point.
David Benedict, The Arts Desk, 23rd January 2018The Retreat, Park Theatre, London, review
Directed by Kathy Burke, written by Sam Bain, and starring three familiar faces from British TV in recent years, this is a production loaded with talent.
Joe Vesey-Byrne, The Independent, 8th November 2017The Retreat review - funny but faltering Sam Bain play
Tim Auld, The Telegraph, 7th November 2017Kathy Burke: interview
'Lifelong member of the non-pretty working classes'. That's how Kathy Burke describes herself. But the famously outspoken actor and director has proved she can't be pigeonholed. Stefanie Marsh meets her.
Stefanie Marsh, The Guardian, 29th October 2017Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie - review
Producers did not release the Ab Fab film to the critics ahead of its release yesterday, which is rarely a vote of confidence. Add to that the fact that it's a big-screen adaptation of a sitcom - a genre with a patchy track record, The Inbetweeners Movie notwithstanding - and that it uses the tired and tested plot device of plonking their characters somewhere foreign, and the signs are not encouraging. Yet despite such portents, Absolutely Fabulous is as much of a fun, raucous romp as fans would have hoped for - director Mandie Fletcher throwing proceedings into the preposterous story and high camp with as much vigour now as there was when the series started a rather incredible 24 years ago.
