Hi, I'm going to do this as me, bucking that third person trend! I'm a freelance writer, comedy PR and director. Before juggling these hats, I was The Independent's comedy critic for ten years between 2003-2013 and, during that time, wrote The Rough Guide to British Cult Comedy.
Since becoming a PR, I've worked with acts including Laura Lexx, Geoff Norcott, Spencer Jones, Rebecca Humphries, Olaf Falafel, Kat Bond, Chelsea Birkby, Pierre Novellie, Bilal Zafar and Simon Munnery.
I've also directed a number of Edinburgh Fringe shows (Bilal Zafar, Sasha Ellen, Pierre Novellie and Inder Manocha) and given show notes on many more, including for Glenn Moore, Isma Almas, Matt Winning and Alex Edelman.
Outside of work, I ran the SE1 Comedy night 2021/22 (including some reluctant MCing and some fitfully passable sets) and created and co-hosted the live online show Let's Kill Twitter (2020-2022) with a series of top comedian guests.
**I'm on the lookout for a comedy collaborator to bounce around ideas for sitcoms and/or comedy dramas.**
In terms of scripted writing experience, I wrote two shows for BBC Radio 2: 'Alexei Sayle's Alternative Take', which aired in 2008, and 'David Jason's Christmas Comedy Classics' that was broadcast on Christmas Day, 2011.
Meanwhile, I've had a comedy drama treatment optioned, and I'm hoping to live out my bucket list wish of filling a comedy commissioner's drawer with good ideas that will never get made, I mean, creating so many bangers that a whole new streaming channel would need to be created to house them.
As a guide to what passes for my sense of telly humour, my favourite shows include: Friends, Frasier, Cheers, Taxi, Buffy, Sex and the City, Fresh Meat, Search Party (when it wasn't changing genres), Extraordinary, GIRLS, Cheaters, Big Boys, Younger (bit cheesy but a good hook), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Rising Damp, Dead Pixels, No Angels, Succession (I mean, come on, it's a comedy, right?), and more as I remember them...the stuff I haven't mentioned is as telling as the stuff I have!
Currently languishing in my ideas bag:
- A very meta comedy drama involving a simultaneous and transatlantic high school experience.
- A sitcom about two single 40-plus types negotiating a huge generation chasm, and the challenges that go with that -work, dating and so on.
- something I literally thought of while I was writing this involves spinning-off a character from a classic TV show mentioned above (keeping it vague #potentialestateissues). It has a semi-Contrarian/Falling Down vibe **trigger warning**
If any of these directions has appeal, or if you have ideas that might suit the interest areas and influences referenced above, then let's chat!
