Fringe: where shows with no audience can get 4* reviews
I was already behind on six interesting blog chats which I had had last week and which I had been going to post in the days leading up to my arrival in Edinburgh.
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 3rd August 20163 ways to publicise a show without using a PR person
From Lewis Schaffer, Ellis & Rose and Louise Reay.
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 29th July 2016I am lazy. Comedy club crowdfunding continues.
On 3rd June, I had a chat with Barry Ferns and Dec Munro about the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign they had just started to help finance the new Angel Comedy 2.0 comedy club in London's Islington. The idea was that I could give their campaign a boost with a blog. What could go wrong?
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 21st July 2016James Ross on being successful with accessible comedy
The monthly-ish Quantum Leopard comedy show in London this Saturday is sold out in advance - as always. Organiser James Ross does not have a website for the shows. He thinks it would be a waste of time and money. He says: "The Quantum Leopard Facebook group is very much the key mechanism for publicity."
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 4th May 2016Will Franken: "I am unable to create in moderation"
"I think a lot of sketches go on far too long. They don't know a clever way out. They don't know the Monty Python approach of Don't beat them over the head with a sledgehammer punchline, just find a nice segue into something else. Brevity!"
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 23rd April 2016John Dowie interview
John Dowie is difficult to describe. Wikipedia's current attempt is: "a British comedian, musician and writer. He began performing stand-up comedy in 1969."
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 7th April 2016We Are Thomasse. They are talented.
I saw American-based comedy sketch duo We Are Thomasse at the Museum of Comedy in London. They flew in on the Thursday, did the show on Friday, attended a wedding on Saturday (their real reason for flying over) and flew out on Sunday.
John Fleming, 31st March 2016New age of alternative musical comedy
Yesterday afternoon, I went to a Quarter Final of this year's Musical Comedy Awards, which had 12 contestants performing. The Semi-Finals and Final are yet to come. The Awards have been running eight years and I had not been aware of them. Which demonstrates what I know about anything.
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 6th March 2016Gilded Balloon venue's deal excretes on Fringe spirit
We hope to stage the annual Malcolm Hardee Comedy Awards Show this year, as usual, on the final Friday of the Edinburgh Fringe - 26th August - but not in its normal venue of the Counting House Ballroom. This is because, today, The Gilded Balloon (a pay-to-enter venue) has 'poached' The Counting House venue(s) - including the Pear Tree and Blind Poet - from the Laughing Horse Free Festival and so we are looking for a new venue in which to host both the increasingly prestigious (but now homeless) Malcolm Hardee Comedy Awards and for the daily Grouchy Club.
John Fleming, John Fleming's Blog, 25th February 2016Will Franken interview
"Are you hanging up your dress forever?" For six months last year, Will performed as Sarah Franken, in a dress and wig. "Yes," he replied. "Well, I haven't got rid of the clothes. They're still in my room."
