James Murphy started performing stand-up in 2019 with his second solo gig at C Venues' Electric Cabaret at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He went on to become a finalist in the 2Northdown New Act Competition 2021, Max Turner Prize 2022, BCG Pro Talent Awards for Performance 2022, and semi-finalist in the LST New Comedian of the Year competition 2022, as well as winning the G&B New Act award.
His writing made the top 10% of BBC Writersroom entries in 2021, shortlisted in The Script Lab's screenplay competition 2021, and has been longlisted in the Short Com Sitcom script competition 2022, shortlisted in Southampton Film Week's Short Film Awards, and selected for the IMIS table read 2019. He has also written children's comedy for Nelson Nutmeg Pictures.
He has written and produced the comedy short What a Feeling and, during lockdown, Comedy Street, a web series starring fellow comedians from the London circuit for which he produced and performed in a semi-scripted live launch night. He has produced live shows and sketches with fellow comedian Ryan Ward including performances at Bournemouth Comedy Nation, live sketch shows, a live panel show, and feature-length comedy show Turtle Shoes performed at the Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
