Rab is Alf Garnett without the social polish. His head is bandaged but unbowed. He holds up his poke of congealing chips to a malign sky like the Statue of Liberty.

Nancy Banks-Smith, The Guardian, 19th June 1992

Rab C. Nesbitt is also a philosopher, pondering like Arthur C Clarke the mysteries of this and other worlds. He has the theory that the scum will inherit the earth because they have the bullterriers, but many of his finest thoughts are lost to us because we haven't a clue what he is saying. Much the same was true of Confucius.

Nancy Banks-Smith, The Guardian, 2nd January 1990
