The Larkins, Episode 1 review
A charming escape into HE Bates's bucolic fantasy.

The Larkins, the ITV comedy drama starring Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan, is returning for a second series.
British Comedy Guide, 19th January 2022Darling Buds Of May adaptation The Larkins on ITV
ITV has confirmed it has commissioned a new adaptation of H.E. Bates' novel, The Darling Buds Of May. Titled The Larkins, it'll star Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan.
British Comedy Guide, 10th December 2020Though the television series is a polite version of H.E. Bates dumpling-bobbing peasant stew, there is still something in it which tastes ambrosially of childhood. Never were skies so cornflower blue or beds so swansbottom.
Nancy Banks-Smith, The Guardian, 13th May 1991More's the pity that The Darling Buds Of May is only a so-so series. It may be that the book sets every sense singing, particularly touch, taste and smell, while TV rations us to two. I did smell new baked bread on TV once but that [must] have been a magical production. You can say this for The Darling Buds Of May, nobody gets murdered and that is downright unique for a Sunday.
