Mark Steel has beaten cancer, he revealed today.

The comic posted on X, still popularly known as Twitter, that "a nice man from UCL Hospital called this week, to say a scan of me showed the cancer I had has all gone. The treatment worked, the cancer bottled it and ran off, the wimp."

Steel disclosed that he had been diagnosed with throat cancer, which had spread to his lymph nodes, in an article for The Guardian in October, recalling how he had been with his close friends and fellow comics Linda Smith and Jeremy Hardy in their final days when they died of the disease.

Steel's son, stand-up Elliot Steel, who lives with his father in London, reacted on X with: "Great news for fans of Radio 4, horrendous news for fans of me owning a property."

Earlier this week it was announced that Matt Forde, who had a tumour removed from his spine, would be returning to stand-up with an Edinburgh Fringe run.

Recording for the 13th series of Mark Steel's In Town resumes on Wednesday in Stoke-on-Trent, with free tickets for the Radio 4 show available via bbc.co.uk
