Ricky Gervais wins Golden Globe award for Armageddon
[The Netflix special Ricky Gervais: Armageddon has won the inaugural award for Best Stand-Up Comedy on Television at the Golden Globes.
Gervais was nominated alongside Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes. Before the ceremony he wrote on social media: "I'm nominated for another Golden Globe tonight. This time for my Netflix special #Armageddon. Won't win, but it's nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag."
The result was announced by Jim Gaffigan, who joked "This is the first time stand-up comedians have been acknowledged at a major awards show. For 80 years, good looking people threw a party and now you've finally decided to invite the talented people."
Gervais wasn't at the ceremony to collect the trophy, as he was on stage elsewhere warming up for his next stand-up tour.
Elsewhere in the awards, British comedy film Poor Things won in the 'Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy' category, and Emma Stone picked up the Best Actress trophy for her role in the movie.
