A crowdfunding campaign aiming to support the sons of stand-up Gareth Richards, who died last week following a car crash, has raised over £15,000.

Set up by his wife and agents Mirth Control, the Just Giving page aimed to raise £500, but over 290 supporters pledging money means it has resulted in reaching 3,000% of its goal.

The page explains: "This page is in memory of the comedian Gareth Richards; and is to raise money for a trust fund for his two sons aged 11 and 13. Gareth passed away on Friday 7th April (Good Friday) at 6.30pm. He was in a terrible car accident on Monday 27th March at 11.30pm and sustained serious brain injuries which he was unable to survive. He was so loved by so many people and will be greatly missed but we know he is now at peace. He loved the boys so much and was very proud of them. He did the best bedtime stories and loved flying kites with them. Thank you all for your support and kindness. Mirth Control will announce a fundraising event in due course."

The JustGiving page is still open and accepting donations.

24th April update: The total is now over £44,000.
