Scenes Of A Sexual Nature review

Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy and Sophie Okonedo are big names doing small roles in this pleasant 2006 portmanteau film.

Leslie Felperin, The Guardian, 30th October 2020

Like The Full Monty, this is a story of northern folk facing industrial ruin. But where Monty is feelgood, Brassed Off is bitterly angry, sweetened with laughter. The pits are on the verge of closure and a community is fragmenting in painful detail, while Pete Postlethwaite's Grimley Colliery Band band plays on. Ewan McGregor and Tara FitzGerald add romance as childhood sweethearts, and Stephen Tompkinson is excellent as Postlethwaite's son.

Rated or Dated: Brassed Off

It's 20 years since the release of Mark Herman's tale of the Grimley Colliery band. Karen Campbell wonders if it's more relevant than ever.

Radio Times review

Ewan McGregor has a cameo tonight as a sleazier version of himself, subjecting Doll to his terrible poetry after taking a shine to her in a bar.

Even more deliciously awkward are the moments when Doll blithely announces that their play is a symbol of their friendship, so if it's a failure "we've got a lot to lose" - at which point Em half-chokes, half-laughs and looks as if she's about to burst into tears - and when the actresses playing them wonder casually whether Doll and Em's friendship isn't platonic after all.

Now in direct competition with Alan Carr: Chatty Man over on Channel 4! It's battle of the catty chat shows! Who will win the ratings? Who will come up with the daftest games and most excruciating audience participation? Who willbe most baffling to visiting Hollywood stars? It's all good fun. This week's guests are Ewan McGregor, who's got a new film out called Beginners, Chris O'Dowd, who's got a new film out called Bridesmaids, and a rapper who goes by the name of Example.

Tom Chivers, The Telegraph, 30th June 2011

Combining two slightly recherché national interests, this drama tells the story of a Yorkshire brass band against the backdrop of Michael Heseltine's destruction of the mining industry. Pete Postlethwaite is conductor Danny, and Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald play hopeless lovers. Funny, thoughtful and the right side of mawkish.
