TV review: Brassic, series 1 episode 1

The ongoing plot looks intriguing as well with Gilgun's narration informing us at the end of the episode that this was the moment that everything changed for him, and I certainly plan to stick around and find out just how that happens.

When MI7 hears of a plot to assassinate the Chinese premier, the only man to turn to is disgraced agent Johnny English, who is coming to transcendental terms with his utter incompetence in a Tibetan monastery. More amiable slapstick and gurning from Rowan Atkinson, abetted by a Bond-like Dominic West, M-like Gillian Anderson and retro-Bond-babe Rosamund Pike.

Radio Times review

Rowan Atkinson returns as the spy oblivious to his own incompetence in this lively sequel, which sees him lured out of retirement by his former bosses at MI7 to hunt down an international group of assassins plotting to kill the Chinese premier. Armed with the most hi-tech gadgets the world of espionage has to offer, English sets off across the globe to bring the bad guys to book, unaware that the real threat may be closer to home. Atkinson is great value as the idiot sleuth, although some of director Oliver Parker's stunts and set pieces would be more suited to the slapstick antics of Mr Bean. Straight-faced support from Gillian Anderson and Dominic West as fellow MI7 operatives adds to the fun, but it's clearly Atkinson's show from start to finish.

Titillating talk-show host and Telegraph columnist Graham Norton has an all-male line-up tonight. He's joined by British actor Damian Lewis, who's currently garnering rave reviews for his role in Channel 4's US spy drama Homeland. Lewis's fellow Etonian Dominic West - who starred in the searing US crime saga The Wire - drops by to talk about his latest film John Carter, about an American Civil War veteran mysteriously transported to Mars. Also among the guests are French actor Gérard Depardieu and singer Olly Murs, who performs his new single Oh My Goodness.

If you happen to find yourself relaxing in an armchair in front of the television as the end of the decade approaches, you can do much worse than titter away the last hour of the Noughties in the frisky company of Graham Norton and his lively chat show. Joining him in a satirical review of the year are Dominic West, the British actor and star of the American drama series The Wire, the evergreen comedian Joan Rivers, and Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker. Followed by the New Year Fireworks over the Thames in London (BBC One, 11.45pm).
