Al Murray, the Pub Landlord: the pint-swilling philosopher for our times

"This was our Blitz!" announces Al Murray's beer-sloshing alter ego the Pub Landord as he takes to the stage full of characteristically overstated certainties. It's a crowded market if you joke about covid and lockdown, and the Landlord's ideas aren't quite sharp enough to puncture any thoughts of "oh no, not this again". Still, no other act is as well placed to put today's miseries in context. The Landlord is a bar-room philosopher whose arguments slalom between no-nonsense and all-nonsense. He may not have his creator's Oxford degree in modern history, but he has the same broad-canvas view of humanity.
