Preview: Quacks
Victorian medical comedy Quacks begins Tuesday 15th August on BBC Two. Sophie Davies has had a sneak peak at the much anticipated new series...
Sophie Davies, The Velvet Onion, 12th August 2017Preview: Camping, Sky Atlantic, episodes 5 & 6
Don't be fooled by the jaunty sub-Mumfords music at the start of episode 5. Julia Davis' comedy-drama comes to a head in all sorts of horrendous ways in these last two instalments.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 26th April 2016Review: Camping, Sky Atlantic, eps 3 & 4
I was probably a bit unfair to dub this series Nighty Night On Holiday when I first heard about Camping].
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 20th April 2016Beefy Popjoy, Herr Schnellhund, Paquita Manganara: the characters in Guy Andrews's adaptations of PG Wodehouse's stories have such gloriously ludicrous names you can't help but smile. This week a German dance teacher (David Bamber) is drafted in to help Lord Emsworth with his footwork while the sublimely foolish Freddie has managed to marry a girl who speaks no English. He met her in a club "dancing around in a girdle of soft fruit" so he's trying to keep this from his formidable Aunt Connie in case "she soars over my cranium and feasts on my brains". "A meagre luncheon that will be" is Emsworth's cutting response.
Jane Rackham, Radio Times, 27th January 2013Cast announced for new PG Wodehouse comedy Blandings
Mark Williams, David Bamber and David Walliams are amongst the cast joining Timothy Spall and Jennifer Saunders for new BBC comedy series Blandings.
British Comedy Guide, 14th April 2012This is manna for lovers of the macabre - a shudder one minute, a cackle the next. Steve Pemberton's new character Hattie (surely a blood relation of The League of Gentlemen's Pauline) seizes her opportunity at a sham wedding, while Pemberton's Benidorm chum Sheila Reid shows up as another witchy gran, with designs on poor Tommy. The Sowerbutts plan a dinner party from hell, willing anaphylaxis upon shifty, peanut-sensitive Robin (David Bamber); Maureen (Reece Shearsmith) also subjects her guests to a party piece, which is, well, "simply the best!" Shearsmith is great too, without all the hideous make-up, as beyond-anal librarian Jeremy who sees David Lynch-ian phantoms between the bookcases - and stay alert for a cameo from another cult movie director, John Landis.
