Why I'm Quitting Comedy Competitions, by Tom Ward
I've seen Tom Ward in three comedy competition finals over the last year - the NATYS, the BBC Radio New Comedy Awards final and most recently the Piccadillly Comedy Club New Comedian of the Year. He has always stood out to me as one to watch and I've been amazed that he has not won any of them. Last week Ward posted a message on Facebook saying that he would no longer be taking part in competitions. I was surprised by this decision as they are traditionally a great way for a comedian to get noticed by the industry. Heck, even Daniel Kitson did talent competitions when he was starting out. Though, notably he didn't win one. Anyway, I asked Tom Ward to write this piece to explain why he had taken this decision. Here is his response.
Tom Ward, Beyond The Joke, 14th January 2015Review: Tree by Daniel Kitson, Old Vic
Needless to say, there are plenty of pithy lines tossed back and forth. Kitson, of course, is such a natural performer that even lines that aren't funny on paper are funny when he delivers them while shuffling around high above the in-the-round stage (he is strapped to the trunk, he is not stupid). Key is the perfect counterpoint.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 6th January 2015Another new show from Daniel Kitson...

Brian Logan, The Guardian, 22nd December 2014Daniel Kitson review
The conclusion is lovely, too: its combination of magic, catharsis and sentimentality is pitched perfectly, without overpromising happy endings or undermining the emotional realities of what's gone before. After only a week's run, Kitson's Christmas show is over almost as soon as it began. But its story is for the ages.
Brian Logan, The Guardian, 7th December 2014Review: A Show For Christmas by Daniel Kitson
Comedy - and theatre - fans will already know how good Kitson is and this is up there with his best work. There is his usual compassion, his usual humanity and his usual comedy. Nothing too fussy, just a uber-Jackanory narrative for grown-ups. The venue was extremely cold at the start, but the Kitson magic warmed everybody up. Sorry. I guess I could have saved your time and written one word. Lovely.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 5th December 2014Review: Daniel Kitson, Stewart Lee & more
It is hard to believe but there have been mutterings of a Daniel Kitson backlash. His latest theatre piece, Analog.Ue was not greeted by the usual ecstatic reviews. Maybe - though I fully expect he would deny it - that is why he has been getting back to his first love of stand-up recently, compering a number of benefits with a few more in the pipeline. This really is what he does best. As he jokily boasted onstage at the Palace Theatre last night, he is, after all, the finest comedian of his generation.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 7th October 2014News: Daniel Kitson plays major benefit gig
Daniel Kitson is to compere a major London benefit gig in aid of a charity fighting homelessness among young people. The gig will take place at the Palace Theatre on October 6. Also appearing are Stewart Lee, Katherine Ryan and Josh Widdicombe. The charity they are suppprting is Laughing Point, a fundraiser in aid of leading youth homelessness charity Centrepoint.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 10th August 2014The Tom Shillue three minute interview
One of the best comedy storytellers in the US, Tom Shillue has put together a new show, Impossible especially for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Surprised that Tom had never played in the UK, Daniel Kitson recommended him...
