Live review: Funny Women Final

The fourth act in this year's Funny Women Stage Award final, Charlie George, commented soon after coming onstage that "No-one is straight any more." She had clearly being watching from the wings or chatting to her fellow finalists as almost all of this year's Funny Women final line-up were either gay, bisexual, transsexual or pansexual. It's probably a reflection of both the comedy world and the "real" world and good to see that people can be open and honest about their sexuality at a time when society also feels like it is in danger of becoming more closed.

Funny Women final 2019 review

With so much of today's best comedy, especially on TV, coming from women, it seems more ridiculous than ever to think of female-led comedy as a sub-genre. And judging by the impressively strong final in this year's Funny Women award, there are plenty more talented comics waiting in the traps to keep redressing the industry's historic gender imbalance.

Comedy Bloomer's LGBTQ+ New Comedian Of The Year review

The spoils - a whole £250 - went to Charlie George, a personable and witty comic who seems to have come a long way in the five short months since an unremarkable performance the Leicester Square new comedian final.

Meet the women running LGBTQ-friendly comedy nights

What's up Funny Women! This is Siân Docksey about to drop the hottest guest blog since someone decided that was a thing (i.e. me, just now.) I'm launching my new alternative comedy night Permitted Fruit at a lovely new LGBTQ-friendly venue that warmly welcomes anyone and everyone, so I decided to have a chat with the boss LGBTQ women who run comedy nights in London. Read on for their excellent tips and to play the accidentally-created drinking game 'How many more times will Siân derail her own interview by talking about astrology?'

Leicester Square Theatre comedian of the year review

Here's a sobering thought: in the ten years of the Leicester Square new comedian competition, 4,200 hopefuls have auditioned, according to venue owner Martin Witts. That's quite a lot of acts whose careers have gone nowhere.
