TV: This Country - episode two, BBC Three/BBC One

Fears that award-winning mockumentary This Country might outstay its welcome and run out of steam by returning for a third series were quickly dispelled with last week's classic opener and the standard stays just as high for this second episode following life in a Cotswold village.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 24th February 2020

It's the third and final series of Cotswolds mockumentary comedy This Country (also streamed on BBC Three), written by and starring siblings Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper, as Kerry and Kurtan.

The opening episode featured lovable monster Kerry and the wonderfully eerie Kurtan coming to terms with the death of Sluggs (their real life co-star, Michael Sleggs, died last year, aged 33). A letter left by Sluggs revealed that he and Kerry were responsible for a broken holiday bed that Kurtan was blamed for. Furious at Kerry ("Her only loyalty is to herself, staffies and the TV channel Dave"), Kurtan ensured that Kerry lost her new job at a recycling plant ("At the end of the day I'm a very vindictive person. It's what makes me me"). The episode finished with the pair rebonding over how proud they were of Sluggs for "shit-stirring from beyond the grave".

What a great tribute to Mr Sleggs. The strength of This Country is keynotes that lie not in cruelty or mockery, but rather affection and silliness, and all so sharply done. I, for one, will miss this feral, witty dance around the Cotswolds.

Review: Greed

As one wonders how much this film overlaps with Coogan and Winterbottom's upcoming Trip To Greece in terms of inspiration, one also wonders if the actor is keeping a little powder dry for his future #MeToo comedy-drama with Solemani on Channel 4.

We are back in the Cotswolds with cousins Kerry and Kurtan for the third season of this deadpan mockumentary. With news of the death of a beloved local resident to contend with and Kerry forced to take a job - thanks to an alpaca-related debt - Kurtan steps in to provide some much-needed domestic help. A revelation from beyond the grave soon throws things into a spin for the mismatched pair, who are real-life sister and brother. Pitch-perfect and expertly paced. Also streaming on BBC Three.

This Country Series 3 review

Everything works in perfect concert to portray this deep, unspoken friendship between Kerry and Kurtan, enduring through some testing times.

This Country review

Like The Office at its best, Daisy May and Charlie Cooper's Cotswolds-set mockumentary remains hilarious, potent and exquisite right to the end.

Daisy May and Charlie Cooper's hilarious mockumentary is as infinitely quotable as ever.

Review: This Country

BBC Three's sublime rural mockumentary This Country is back for what creators Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper have said is its final series. When we last saw the Mucklowe cousins (played by the Cooper siblings) just over a year ago in 'The Aftermath', Kerry was finally coming to terms with the selfishness of her dad, whom she had always idolised, while Kurtan was struggling to cope with losing his job at the bowls club.
