I made this... Cunk on Shakespeare

Giving Charlie Brooker's comedy character Philomena Cunk her own BBC Two 'documentary' - producer Sam Ward offers his take on creating a "narrative, factual entertainment" comedy hybrid.

How comedy became a language of democratic politics

Like all forms of resistance, comedy can both shore up and legitimate existing political structures, yet it can also, in certain moments, work to encourage revision. Here, James Brassett looks specifically at the critical nature of radical British comedy by the likes of Russell Brand, Charlie Brooker, and Stewart Lee and writes that it raises questions about the nature of resistance and reveals the deeply political nature of the British public.

Channel 4 fights to keep Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror

Relations between broadcaster Channel 4 and production group Endemol Shine have almost broken down over the right to broadcast Charlie Brooker's show Black Mirror in the UK.

Jane Martinson, The Guardian, 18th March 2016

This topical comedy show brings together young British comics, including Dane Baptiste, Ivo Graham, Rhys James, Ellie White and Jamie Demetriou. It feels like a scattershot ensemble, but makes slightly more sense when you learn this is being positioned as a reboot of The 11 O'Clock Show, the late-90s format that helped to shape the current comedy mainstream by employing everyone from Ricky Gervais to Sacha Baron Cohen, David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Charlie Brooker and Robert Popper.

Satirical shows still not allowed parliament footage

Producers of political comedy still come up against one immovable obstacle: they cannot use footage of parliamentary proceedings. Chris Grayling, the Leader of the House of Commons, yesterday shot down a request from Rupa Huq, a Labour MP who is the sister-in-law of comedian Charlie Brooker, to consider relaxing what many see as an arcane restriction.

TV review: Charlie Brooker's 2015 Wipe

Charlie Brooker's end-of-the-year Wipes have become essential viewing. They are the best way of making some kind of sense of the mess the world is in today. And this year's edition was no exception. Except there was a problem. 2015 is probably the bleakest year since Brooker has been doing these shows.

Radio Times review

Whatever horrors the world has endured over the past 12 months - war, pestilence, terrorism and Piers Morgan's new presenting gig on Good Morning Britain (only kidding, Piers), then we can always be sure of some traditional comforts. One is that Charlie Brooker and friends will extract some comic mileage in his now-traditional end-of-year round-up.

Joined by contributors Doug Stanhope, Morgana Robinson (complete with her extraordinary Russell Brand impersonation) and Diane Morgan as the fabulously vacuous pundit Philomena Cunk, laughter appears guaranteed. Page Three and Cecil the Lion may all have died this year, but smart, sassy satire is alive and well on BBC Two.
