Review: Omid Djalili, Leicester Square Theatre
When I reviewed Omid Djalili's current show at the Leicester Square Theatre in the Evening Standard I gave it three stars, which might have suggested that I did not enjoy it a great deal. But I certainly enjoyed his high voltage performance more than I enjoyed the man next to me giving his girlfriend a virtual full-body massage during the interval.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 8th May 2013Opinion: What's Better, New Gags or Old Classics?
I went to see Terry Alderton at the Bloomsbury Theatre last night. Great fun and a full review will be in the Evening Standard on Tuesday. But one particular thing struck me. Alderton was ostensibly doing a new show, but various bits in it came from previous shows.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 6th May 2013Billy Connolly in trouble, can we avoid press hounding?
Here we go again. I guess this will kick off another round of kneejerk Connolly-bashing.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 6th May 2013Opinion: The Problem with Steve Coogan
The Look of Love is another example of Steve Coogan playing a character who is eerily like the iconic Norwich DJ.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 4th May 2013Review: Jimmy Carr, Hammersmith Apollo
Unacceptable behaviour this weekend at Jimmy Carr's gig. Not from the occasional controversialist but from part of his audience.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 3rd May 2013Should reviewers review the show or their experience?
I had a difficult time working out how to write a fair review of Jimmy Carr at the Hammersmith Apollo at the weekend. I'm not the biggest fan of Carr's sometimes brutal one-liners but I thought he was pretty good. The trouble is that it is hard to say the show was an unqualified success for me when the person three seats down was shouting "Dirty Bitch" at the stage.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 29th April 2013Review: Political Animal
Is it possible to have too much politics at a satirical show? That thought lodged in my brain half-way through Political Animal, which featured Andy Zaltzman, Bridget Christie, Chris Coltrane and Francesca Martinez.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 27th April 2013TV Review: 10 O'Clock Live
This first episode certainly seemed to suffer from stiffness and I'm not not talking about Charlie Brooker's new over-gelled, side-parted haircut.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 25th April 2013TV Preview: Snodgrass
This is a different type of comedy for former NME writer David Quantick, who most recently worked regularly as one of the writing team on Harry Hill's TV Burp. It is funny but also strangely touching.
