Joel & Nish Vs The World, Comedy Central UK preview
Very nice work if you can get it. For Nish Kumar anyway. For Joel Dommett it is more painful.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 17th September 2017Preview: W1A Series 3
Writer John Morton's skill is to come up with a fine-tuned series that exquisitely satirises the BBC and broadcasting in particular but also a certain kind of modern workplace management culture in general.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 17th September 2017Comedy Playhouse: Static, BBC1
Of the three BBC1 pilots that have just aired Static easily has the most potential. To use a phrase that will probably get this metropolitan elite critic in trouble it hardly pushes the envelope but it is definitely easy to like.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 14th September 2017TV preview: Back, Episode 2, C4
When writer Simon Blackwell's new series starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb was launched last month publications were sent an episode-by-episode breakdown. Creative thoughtful, pedantic, thorough and, yes, very funny.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 10th September 2017Book review: Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt
It would be interesting to hear what Jeremy Hunt thinks of this book, but somehow I doubt if he will read it.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 10th September 2017TV review: Comedy Playhouse, Mister Winner, BBC1
Whether this will be a series is another matter though.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 9th September 2017TV: Upstart Crow, BBC2
Ben Elton's eloquent defence of the mainstream sitcom last month was illuminating, fascinating and persuasive. And in a way maybe it could be seen by some as an incidental pre-emptive strike against critics who might have their hatchets sharpened for the new series of Upstart Crow, Elton's popular sitcom about Shakespeare's early years starring David Mitchell. If that is the case though Elton needn't worry. The only thing he has to live with here is critics trotting out the "not-as-good-as-Blackadder" line.
