Interview: rarely asked questions - Steve N Allen
In a time when you can't do right for doing wrong, Steve N Allen, best known for his smart-suited, sharp-tongued regular appearances on BBC Two's Mash Report, takes a look at how hard it is to be better in his Edinburgh show. When you want to be PC, right on or woke, it can be tough. Be better than an angry Twitter egg. Be better than you.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 31st July 2019Preview: The South Bank Show - Shearsmith & Pemberton
Receiving the full-length documentary treatment is certainly an accolade for Inside No 9 creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. The challenge for Melvyn Bragg and the makers is how to condense what is now a pretty lengthy career into a single one-hour (including ads) programme.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 30th July 2019Edinburgh preview: Returning Champions
It's hard to stay away from Edinburgh whether you are new to the comedy game or an old hand. This year there are a number of brilliant comedians coming back who have won the Edinburgh Comedy Award, best known as the Perrier but now sponsored by digital channel Dave. You can only win the top award once and there are certainly easier ways to make money, so why come back? It must be for the sheer fun and the incredible buzz of the Fringe.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 28th July 2019Rarely asked questions - Richard Stott
Comedian Richard Stott is making his Edinburgh Fringe debut this summer and he certainly has an original story. Richard was born with Poland Syndrome making him lopsided with a misshapen hand and missing pectoral muscle.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 24th July 2019Preview: Been there, done that, back & doing it again
There's a school of thought that the Edinburgh Fringe is a Young Person's Game. But actually in recent years it has become an older person's game too. Maybe they are the baby boomer generation who can afford to lose a few grand every August or maybe they just love the thrill of the Fringe and the art of stand-up. Whatever the reasons here are some comedians who know the game inside out and are the collective epitome of a safe pair of comedy hands. And no, they are not listed in descending order of chronology. We'll not be having any age before beauty here. Some of them might not be doing a full Fringe run, but at their age I think we can allow them a few days off. Click on their names for their dates and ticket details.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 22nd July 2019The Edinburgh Fringe's top male comedians to watch
Last week I ran a story about the women set to dominate this year's Edinburgh Fringe. I was thinking about posting a companion piece about men, except that when you click on the link you get a blank page. A bit like if someone published a book called The Compassion And Wisdom of Donald Trump and when you open it there is nothing in it.
Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 21st July 2019Review: GameFace, C4
Main female character with a chaotic life, dishy enigmatic male, boozy friends, embarrassing sexual scenarios, therapy sessions...it's impossible to write about Roisin Conaty's GameFace without at least noting some of the similarities with Fleabag.
