2012-2013 UK comedy pipeline update

We have seen a hint of what's in store for BBC drama output with the upcoming premiere of Ripper Street but now is the time to focus on some upcoming comedy projects that will make their way to telly in the not-too-distant future. Given that new series for Trollied, Spy and Rev are already lined up, this is a good time for comedy on the tube in the coming months. Here are a few others on the horizon...

Some extremely welcome news on the comedy front as Sky1 HD unlocks the doors of Valco later this month for a second series of Trollied on Sky1 HD.

Seinfeld's 'Comedians in Cars' vs Llewellyn's 'Carpool'

A look at which of two comedy car shows is better: the American Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld, or the British Carpool with Robert Llewellyn.

Patricia Routledge lends efforts to order of nuns

Ms. Routledge is now leading a £2.4m drive to build an abbey for an enclosed order of contemplative nuns and will front the campaign for The Community of Our Lady of Consolation - an order of nuns who, ironically, rarely watch television. The campaign will raise funds for the second phase of the development of Stanbrook Abbey, at Wass in North Yorkshire.

'Industry Insights' from a few greats of British comedy

Probably a bit of an overkill statement, but even with its ups and downs, British situation comedy is still king of comedy on telly... bar none. A big part of which I attribute to the writers. The concept of good writing has never been more important...and needed...than it is today competing in an over-saturated world of unscripted drama and comedy.

Basil Fawlty, the paton saint of Friday the 13th

For many, Friday the 13th may be the one day where your actions (or inactions) range from staying inside, avoiding black cats, walk way out of your way to prevent you from walking under ladders, or even attempting to avoid buildings that have a 13th floor. Unfortunately, for Basil Fawlty, every day is Friday the 13th at Fawlty Towers without his even trying. When you think about it, in 12 short episodes, Basil experienced a lifetime of Friday the 13th's.

Does dumbing down signal the End of Civilization?

My thought was that when looking at where British comedy began and then what transpired over the next several decades, the quality of comedy output from the UK has suffered greatly in recent years.

New ITV2 comedy, Plebs, brings reminders of Up Pompeii

In setting only, as Plebs reads more like an Animal House style Toga party, the series reminds me of the classic BBC comedy, Up Pompeii, starring the late, great Frankie Howerd.

New comedy from BBC3 and Sky 1 to keep an eye on...

With some pretty major commitments from the likes of Sky1 HD, ITV and the Beeb, things are definitely looking up which bodes well for series to migrate to the States. Series like Spy, Stella and Trollied have been both been renewed for a second series which means they are one step closer to an American audience.....here are a couple more that have just premiered to keep an eye on.

A look at the Silver Jubilee Good Life performance

At the conclusion of the myriad of events surrounding the recent Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebration, I started thinking back to the Silver Jubilee in 1977 when Her Majesty and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, attended a taping of an episode of The Good Life (Good Neighbors in the States), starring Richard Briers, Felicity Kendal, Penelope Keith and Paul Eddington.
