Born in Hounslow, London, Asim Chaudhry is a British comedian and actor best known for playing the much-loved salesman and huckster Chabuddy G in BBC mockumentary series People Just Do Nothing, which he co-created. This role would earn him multiple awards, including a Royal Television Society Award and a BAFTA nomination.
It was whilst at college that Chaudhry met Hugo Chegwin, Steve Stamp, and Allan Mustafa, with whom he created a range of YouTube videos mocking a pirate radio station that amusingly imagined themselves to have amassed a gigantic online following. As it began to grow in popularity, Ash Atalla at the BBC saw them, became interested, and eventually commissioned the BBC Three series People Just Do Nothing, which premiered in 2014. This rockumentary sitcom sees Chaudhry play Chabuddy G, a tricky but well-meaning entrepreneur who manages the pirate radio station and musical group Kurupt FM. Although the show ended in 2018, a film and an American remake are planned, on which Chaudhry will serve as executive producer.
Chaudhry, Chegwin, Stamp and Mustafa deride the group Kurupt FM, but also perform as it! Their single "Heart Monitor Riddem" was released in 2016 after featuring in the rockumentary sitcom they created, with a music video, shot by Chaudhry, appearing in 2018. In character as Chabuddy G. Chaudhry wrote the book How To Be A Man, and together with Chegwin, Stamp., and Mustafa he also produced music as Kurupt FM, the fictional pirate radio station on which People Just Do Nothing is based.
In 2016, Chaudhry took on the role of none other than Donald Trump in the short film Donald Mohammed Trump, a pitch-black comedy film about the Republican nominee for president (and later Leader of the Free World) suddenly transforming into an Asian man at a Republican Party rally. Comedy derives from the inexplicable nature of such a change, and from the bemused reactions of the assembled crowd.
In the same year, Chaudhry also played a corner-shop owner in Chubby Funny, a comedy-drama film written by Harry Michell about two struggling actors living in London.
2018 was a huge year in the life of Chaudhry, including a recurring appearance in series six of Dave comedy challenge show Taskmaster, alongside Alice Levine, Lisa Tarbuck, Russell Howard, and Tim Vine,. Chaudhry also released the short film Love Pool, which he wrote and directed. It tells the story of a single man, Mark, who meets a woman while sharing a cab with a woman on the service Uber. Chaudhry plays the taxi driver, a sort of bitter cousin of Chabuddy G, and the film won the 2018 People's Choice Award at Thunderdance, an independent film festival in London. In the same year he had an appearance in the comedy film Eaten By Lions, which follows half-brothers Omar and Pete on the search for Omar's estranged father once their parents are eaten by lions. What is more, in May of this year Chaudhry played Arnab in Channel 4 sitcom High & Dry, a six-episode show, filmed in the Seychelles, about a group of people who survive a plane crash. The end of this year saw Chaudhry appear on BBC Christmas television, playing Dev in the television film Click & Collect, alongside Stephen Merchant. The pair have to travel over 300 miles on Christmas Eve to buy Andrew's daughter a Christmas present. Dev is an annoying but loveable friend, bringing the Christmas spirit home and providing an amusing foil to the straight-laced, prim and proper Andrew.
In 2015 and 2016, Chaudhry starred as a driver in the mockumentary series Hoff The Record, in which David Hasselhoff struggles to find work in the UK. The much-loved show won an International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series in 2016.
Chaudhry's film roles include the black comedy films Happy New Year, Colin Burstead and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, released on Netflix on 28 December 2018. Written by Charlie Brooker, it is a standalone episode of the sci-fi anthology series Black Mirror, and this particular edition allows viewers to choose particular endings and routes for the characters to follow. Chaudhry stars as Mohan Thakur, the founder of the video game company Tuckersoft, at which young programmer Stefan works.
