Nick Elleray, Hayley Ellis, Louise Leigh, Lucila San Martin, John Meagher, Firuz Ozari, Ashish Suri and Sam Williams will compete in the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year 2022 final. The comedians involved in Silver Stand Up, UK Pun Championships and Union JACK Radio's Circuit Breakers have also been announced.

Fifteen acts made the final of this New Comedian of the Year competition. That's a lot of laughs and hopefully a lot of bar takings with two intervals taking the evening over the the marathon three hour mark. A quick declaration - I was a judge and watched a live stream via Nextup. It all worked smoothly and I didn't even have to queue for a drink in the interval(s).

This year's 'world series' final of Manchester's Beat The Frog new act challenge was a game of two halves. Before the interval the crowd were subdued, not even giving compere Danny McLoughlin's quick-witted ad libs the laughs they deserved; afterwards they were reenergised, and the comedians sharper too. Which is cause and which is effect is open to debate.
