Christmas interview with Arthur Smith

Arthur Smith is something of a legend in the world of alternative comedy. And he's the perfect fit for pop-up comedy venue Grotto at the HoHo Theatre where he performs as part of This Is Your Trial alongside Josie Long and Tim FitzHigham.

Arthur Smith: The Smiffies

Time for me to announce who has won a 2015 Smiffy, the award every performer would love to receive, if only they knew of its existence.

Exclusive: Arthur Smith sings Lady Gaga

Arthur Smith Sings Lady Gaga is a brand new 'secret' pop-up show. It's not listed in any brochure, but if you see Arthur in and around Edinburgh during the Fringe, tap him on the shoulder, yell, 'sing Gaga' and he'll perform one of her hits, then and there, just for you. Or if that feels too random, you can join him celebrating the Gilded Balloon 30th Anniversary with a Comedy Walk.

Arthur Smith: You're never too old to take the mic

When I started in comedy there were no competitions and I was already too old to be eligible for the first of the 'new act of the year' shows - so I compered them instead.

Arthur Smith: my brilliantly successful disaster

For the veteran comedian, certain shows and festivals occur often enough that they become a small personal tradition. Edinburgh in August is naturally my longest-running theme, followed by the New Act of the Year finals, which I have emceed for many years, Glastonbury and, in more recent times, the Machynlleth Comedy Festival, where I now hope to find myself every May bank holiday until I drop dead.

Review: The House Of Fun With Arthur Smith - Oxford

On the whole though, The House Of Fun is a harmless evening of variable entertainment, and one which could quite easily be enjoyed if enough alcohol were to be consumed throughout.

Getting drunk at the Fringe & singing over a dead body

My left shoulder is in middling agony if I move it. It is comedian Arthur Smith's fault. More about that later.

Diary: 'I failed my A Levels, I better be a stand-up'

A grouchy Arthur Smith arrives in town to Sing Leonard Cohen (Pleasance Courtyard). Arthur made his Fringe debut more than 30 years ago, in the days when there were scores of student review shows and precious few stand-ups. "Now everyone in the world is a stand-up comedian," he grumbles. "I haven't met anyone who isn't: every waiter, every road sweeper, every politician, every nurse. Jeremy Paxman. It's a kind of default thing. We'll have 10,000 more tomorrow: 'Oh, I failed my A Levels, I better be a stand-up.'" There could be consequences, as those festival pheromones kick in. "I'll give you the world exclusive if I catch Paxman snogging Nancy Dell'Olio in the corner of the Pleasance Bar," Arthur promises.
