Alun Cochrane was born in Glasgow and raised in Mirfield, West Yorkshire. His first Edinburgh Fringe show, My Favourite Words In My Best Stories, was nominated for the Best Newcomer award at the Perrier Awards, and shortly after he was nominated for Best Compere and Best Breakthrough Act at the 2005 Chortle Awards.
As well as appearing regularly on BBC Radio 4's The Comedy Club, Cochrane is the co-host of The Frank Skinner Show on Absolute Radio, for which he received a 2012 Arqiva Award nomination for Best Newcomer. He replaced Gareth Richards in this role, and Frank Skinner typically refers to him as "The Cockerel" during each episode.
At the 2008 Fringe Cochrane performed his show Alun Cochrane. Owner of a shed. And a son. Thinks the world is wonky., and his 2010 show, entitled Jokes. Life. And Jokes About Life, centred on a box of his own 'hand-chiseled, lovingly created jokes' from which he would randomly select gags to tell, which he would then incorporate into the show as anecdotes from which ideas and thoughts would spring.
He also wrote and starred in his own BBC Radio 4 series, Alun Cochrane's Fun House, which consisted of a stand-up tour of his own home! Each episode would feature content themed around a different room of said house: 'The Kitchen', 'The Living Room', 'The Bathroom', and 'The Bedroom'. In 2014 Cochrane played series regular 'Sam' on the Sky Living sitcom Trying Again, alongside Chris Addison.
As well as his capacity for absurdist, off-the-wall humour, Cochrane is noted for his height (6ft4in), a fact that he validated on Dave's One Night Stand.
