As Alan Carr takes the stage to introduce tonight's stand-up layer-cake, there's a problem. He's not looking at his best. Not only has he already got sweat patches under his arms (entirely forgiveable) but his flies are undone (less so). Could nobody in the production crew have noticed his costume malfunction before they sent the poor man out on stage in front of an excitable Hammersmith audience and half a dozen TV cameras?
To any other comedian such lèse majesté might be a problem, but not Carr, whose act involves belittling himself at every turn in any case: this is a man so shameless he can make comedy from the sweat under his own man boobs. As he cruises through material on vajazzling, wave machines and driving tests, the shambling self-mockery keeps coming, and keeps working.
The very likeable Andi Osho follows, with some good material on sex and relationships ("I don't want the sort of man who licks his finger before turning the page on a Kindle"). And Patrick Kielty takes very public revenge on Daybreak's Adrian Chiles.
David Butcher, Radio Times, 25th November 2011The start of a second series for Frank Skinner's topical comedy show, which consists of Frank and two comedians chatting about the week's news.
It must have been a good idea, because ITV almost replicated it (minus comedians) when they enlisted another chap from the West Midlands, Adrian Chiles, to front That Sunday Night Show which finished last month.
Frank's guests this week are Lee Mack and Miranda Hart who have both done the show before and can be relied on to squeeze laughs out of almost anything.
As with all panel shows, the best stuff doesn't come out of the news itself but from all the chat in between - and with world events being a mixture of doom, gloom and apocalypse that's probably just as well.
Jane Simon, The Mirror, 25th March 2011ITV orders second series of That Sunday Night Show
ITV has ordered a second series of That Sunday Night Show, the late evening light-hearted panel format hosted by Adrian Chiles.
British Comedy Guide, 23rd February 2011Fury at Adrian Chiles' c-word
TV host Adrian Chiles' new series That Sunday Night Show has been hit with complaints after he said the c-word.
The Sun, 17th February 2011In the style of Mock The Week, with guests straight off Have I Got News For You and a format borrowed from that other topical debut of the week, 10 O'Clock Live, this new panel show has launched itself in an already overcrowded genre.
And with in-depth discussion of Jordan's latest failed marriage and in-depth handling of some stress-ball breasts, That Sunday Night Show clearly had its brows aimed significantly lower than any of the aforementioned shows.
In this episode, Kevin Bridges, Catherine Tate and John Prescott joined host Adrian Chiles to discuss everything from Ricky Gervais' performance at the Golden Globes to the suspension of the Education Maintenance Allowance for young people, as the emollient Max Clifford and Piers Morgan were wheeled on to comment.
But if the range of topics covered was impressive, the profundity with which they were discussed was something else, as the time constraints of the show allowed only for a cursory glance to be cast over each of the subjects.
So, with the comedy already covered on 10 O'Clock Live, interviews carried out competently on Piers Morgan's latest venture and the serious stuff sorted by Have I Got News For You, can there really be any place for this slapdash and skin-deep attempt from ITV? Unless it changes its tack, this show will find itself superfluous to requirements pretty quickly.
Rachel Tarley, Metro, 24th January 2011Daybreak may still be finding its feet, but this post-watershed magazine show seems a better fit for Adrian Chiles's wry sense of humour. Tonight he takes another sideways look at the most interesting stories of the week with two guests likely to deliver piquant views: comedian Catherine Tate and former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.
Vicky Power, The Telegraph, 21st January 2011TV matters: That Sunday Night Show
The ratings are decent, but is Adrian Chiles's new show about the chat or the gags?
Mark Lawson, The Guardian, 20th January 2011That Sunday Night Show gets off to shaky start
Adrian Chiles' new ITV1 show got off to a shaky start as it lost a quarter of its audience during its first outing.
Colin Robertson, The Sun, 11th January 2011Despite the belly-flopping Daybreak, ITV has booked Adrian Chiles to front a more substantial show in a swishy evening slot. Perhaps now he'll find his rhythm and morph back into the convivial but brusque host we warmed to on The One Show. Chiles dissects the week's issues with middleweight celebrities. Names provisionally booked for the first eight shows include Alastair Campbell, Margaret Mountford, formerly of The Apprentice, and, erm, Louis Walsh. What The X Factor judge doesn't know about fiscal debt management, frankly, isn't worth knowing.
Ruth Margolis, Radio Times, 9th January 2011David Mitchell, Jimmy Carr, Charlie Brooker and Lauren Laverne team up to produce a live, topical "comedy and current affairs" show. Think Newsnight with a steady laugh-track. Adrian Chiles is doing something similar for ITV in That Sunday Night Show but this is probably the one to watch.
