In My Skin to return for Series 2
- In My Skin, the BBC Three comedy drama starring Gabrielle Creevy, has been recommissioned
- Writer Kayleigh Llewellyn says: "I cannot wait to finish telling Bethan's story"
- The new series will see troubled Bethan embarking on her last year of school
BBC Three comedy drama In My Skin is to return for a second series.
Written by creator Kayleigh Llewellyn, the new episodes will again star Gabrielle Creevy as school girl Bethan, with Jo Hartley as her bipolar mother.
The producers say: "The five-part unflinching, raw, hilarious and heart-breaking gut punch of a series continues to follow the story of Bethan, the Welsh teenager living a double life as she negotiates mental illness, friendships and sexuality.
"The new series finds Bethan as she is embarking on her last year of school, preparing to unleash herself on the big bad world. She navigates the heady highs of falling in love with her dream woman and planning to fly the nest, all while still desperately trying to hide the violent, unsafe reality of her home life.
"Bethan is faced with the question of sacrificing her own happiness for the sake of her mother which takes her on a journey that forces her to finally find a way to live in her own skin."
The recommission announcement follows the show's win at the Royal Television Society Awards last night, where it picked up the coveted Best Drama Series prize. The judges described the programme as "a fresh and exciting viewing experience, a piece of work executed with genuine creative vision".
Kayleigh Llewellyn says: "I cannot wait to finish telling Bethan's story, or 'the tricky second album' as I like to call it. I've been sat at my laptop every day for months writing the scripts, oscillating between laughing uproariously and ugly crying. Granted that could also be to do with the global pandemic, but I hope the end product will have a similar effect on our audience. I am incredibly lucky to be working with a coven of brilliant women on this show, and we're particularly excited to have Molly Manners joining the team to direct Series 2. Molly is an incredible talent and we're thrilled to have ensnared her."
Commissioner Shane Allen comments: "In My Skin is written and executed with its heart on its sleeve and brings compassion and humour to a world laced with vulnerability. The show portrays a contemporary Welsh spirit which connects with audiences all over the UK as its authenticity punches through."
Executive producer Nerys Evans from producers Expectation says: "From the pilot onwards, it has been so rewarding to work with such a talented group of creatives, Kayleigh's writing, the subject matter and the award-winning performances have all touched so many people and allowed people in similar situations to feel seen.
"Kayleigh's writing has so much heart and integrity, it's a huge privilege to be able to carry on the story into Series 2 and follow Bethan as she takes her first faltering steps into independence."
