  • Exploring the condition with "wit and warmth", it will launch in May

Susan Calman is to host a new comic podcast about depression, the BBC has announced.

Susan Calman's Mrs Brightside: A Cheerful Look At Depression promises to "explore depression with wit and warmth" when it launches in May.

Each week Susan and her guests will discuss their shared experiences, personal anecdotes and funny stories, whilst tackling topics that can be difficult to speak about.

The series will consist of eight episodes.

Last year Susan was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, where she reached the tenth round of the competition and later went on to win the Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour.

On radio, Calman has appeared on The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth, The Now Show, Dilemma, So Wrong It's Right and has guest presented Woman's Hour. She's also recorded two series of her own sitcom and four solo series for the station.

Susan Calman's Mrs Brightside is a new, original podcast from the BBC. It joins the broadcaster's existing podcast range, including some of the most listened-to podcasts in the UK. First episodes of all original BBC podcasts are available to download through the Podcasting House portal, with further episodes available through podcast service providers.

Susan Calman's Mrs Brightside: A Cheerful Look At Depression is produced by Benjamin Sutton for BBC Studios and will be available to download in May.

Calman has previously published a book about her own depression, Cheer Up Love: Adventures in depression with the Crab of Hate. Her follow-up, The Kindness Quest: Dancing For Joy, will be published in September.

Susan Calman - Cheer Up Love: Adventures in Depression with the Crab of Hate

Susan Calman is a well known comedian and writer who has appeared on countless radio and television programmes. Her solo stand-up show, Susan Calman Is Convicted, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and dealt with subjects like the death penalty, appearance and depression.

The reaction to the show she wrote about mental health was so positive that she wanted to expand on the show and write a more detailed account of surviving when you're the world's most negative person.

The Crab of Hate is the personification of Calman's depression and her version of the notorious Black Dog. A constant companion in her life, the Crab has provided her with the best, and very worst of times. This is a very personal memoir of how, after many years and with a lot of help and talking, she has embraced her dark side and realised that she can be the most joyous sad person you'll ever meet.

Cheer Up Love is funny, poignant and (hopefully) informative.
It's always good to talk.
