Click Here For A Summary Of The Results Of The British Comedy Awards
The British Comedy Awards hosted, as always by Jonathan Ross, are live on ITV1 till 10:30pm then continue on ITV2 till 11:30pm. For those that can't get to a TV to watch the inevitable risqué jokes, drunken comics and un-predictable happenings we are printing the results here as they are announced - the winners are shown in red.
Introduction
Jonathan Ross started off with his usual ruthless but very funny welcome. The jokes included references to Chris Langham, ITV Phone Competitions, Russell Brand, Ricky Gervais' Simpsons episode, Heather Mills McCartney's limbs, Paul O'Grady's heart attack, Steve Coogan's love life, ITV's total lack of comedy output, Ant and Dec's salary, Kate Thornton, Craig Charles, C4's Friday night schedule, Michael Barrymore and Lead Balloon.
Best TV comedy actor
David Mitchell and Robert Webb - Peep Show (Channel 4)
Ricky Gervais - Extras (BBC Two)
Stephen Merchant - Extras (BBC Two)
The award has gone to Stephen Merchant who genuinely looked a bit un-happy about something. This is his first British Comedy award for acting.
Best comedy entertainment programme
Ant and Dec's Christmas Takeaway (ITV1)
Harry Hill's TV Burp (ITV1)
Have I Got News for You (BBC One)
And the awards are starting to lose their way already thanks to the snake Nigel Marvin has brought with him. It's escaped and is now lunging towards the audience. Brilliant!
Best comedy entertainment personality
Ant and Dec - Saturday Night Takeaway, I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, Poker Face (all ITV1)
Harry Hill - Harry Hill's TV Burp (ITV1)
Paul Merton - Have I Got News for You (BBC One)
Wow... for once it's not Ant and Dec's night. That makes a change. It appears it's definitely Harry Hill's night - 2 out of 2!
Green Wing is up to second in the People's Choice Award. Jonathan Ross, That Mitchell and Webb Look and Ant and Dec are also in the running.
Best female comedy newcomer
Charlotte Church - The Charlotte Church Show (Channel 4)
Katherine Parkinson - The IT Crowd (Channel 4)
Miranda Hart - Hyperdrive (BBC Two)
What??!? Church was the least deserving of the three nominees (i.e. she's not even slightly funny)!
Best male comedy newcomer
Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins - The Friday Night Project (Channel 4)
Kevin Bishop - Star Stories (Channel 4)
Russell Brand - Russell Brand's Got Issues (E4)
Russell Brand was the obvious choice so no surprises here I guess. Oh I just heard my first swear word!
Best TV comedy actress
Catherine Tate - The Catherine Tate Xmas Special (BBC Two)
Katherine Parkinson - The IT Crowd (Channel 4)
Tamsin Greig - Green Wing (Channel 4)
Outstanding Contribution Chris Tarrant
A rather different but refreshing speech by Lenny Henry there introducing the Tarrant bit. No idea why there are Millionaire clips being shown though, that's got nothing to do with comedy - at least Lenny's pointed that out. Still, I guess Tarrant deserves something for all his TV. Interesting bypass the divorce message to the kids at the end there Chris!
Back from the break... People's Choice Award Update: Ant and Dec (53%), Green Wing (21%), Jonathan Ross (17%) and Mitchell and Webb (9%). It's pretty un-predictable - the percents keep changing. Anyone could win it.
Best new TV comedy
Star Stories (Channel 4)
Suburban Shootout (Five and Paramount Comedy)
That Mitchell and Webb Look (BBC Two)
Shock of the evening so far. I could have sworn this category was going to Mitchell and Webb!
God I hate Madonna (who's just appeared) - go on Ross, have a dig at the over-rated *****!
Writers Guild Ronnie Barker Award Sacha Baron Cohen and the rest of the Borat writing team... for Borat
Sly dig there at the people taking the Borat film to court. That won't help them at the trial!
Best TV comedy
Extras (BBC Two)
Peep Show (Channel 4)
The Thick of It (BBC Four)
Yeeesss! About time Peep Show got this award. Nice to see the judges have given it to them over Extras
Nice to see the new sponsor (Highland Spring Water) getting as much friendly stick from Ross and the audience as OneTel did. Oh and Charles Kennedy... he's someone who doesn't drink much water. Oh... and pow! A risqué joke at the MP's expense from Jonathan Ross!
People's choice award
Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (ITV1) (54%)
Green Wing (Channel 4)
Friday Night with Jonathan Ross (BBC One)
That Mitchell and Webb Look (BBC Two)
Second for Gr 쇓 een Wing. Not bad. Ant and Dec the un-surprising winners though.
Best stage comedy
Little Britain
The Mighty Boosh
The Two Faces of Mitchell and Webb
No surprises really. It seems that it's mandatory to give Little Britain an award each year.
Writers of Great Britain Award Jonathan Ross
oh we're under time.... pad... pad... pad Jonathan... ok and over to ITV2
Best live stand-up tour
Jimmy Carr - Gag Reflex
Lee Evans - XL: UK Tour 2005
Ross Noble - Fizzy Logic
Oh... Tamsin Outhwaite is late to the stage as she was on the loo... things are getting disorganised!
Best international comedy show
Curb Your Enthusiasm (More4)
Everybody Hates Chris (Five)
The Office: An American Workplace (ITV2)
Funny video from Larry David!
And what is going on? This is turning into a shambles. Is Oliver Stone drunk? He's definitely not got his head screwed on.
Best comedy film
Confetti
Little Miss Sunshine
Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Deserved winner in this otherwise weak category. Not the best acceptance speech from Nick Park though - jokes fell flat there.
And that's it for the awards. The cameras now go behind the scenes in an attempt to ruin the atmosphere at the after show party...
OK there's unlikely to be much interest in this after show bit... we've had chats with...
- Tenacious D (No one told them it was Black Tie. They don't watch British Comedy.)
- The Little Britain Boys (Apparently David Walliams wants to guest star on Extras.)
- Alan Carr (Lionel Blair fed him a sausage through a gimp mask in a sketch.)
- Tarrant and Lenny Henry (Guess what... Millionaire chat.)
- Russell Brand (Asked why they brought that naughty snake on stage... no answer really.)
- Ant and Dec (The boys watched a film called Kenny on the plane over.)
- Noel Fielding (Glad Russell Brand won... he's a fan.)
- Dave Spikey (He got a flashing ring in his goodie bag... some discussion about where on the body it should be placed.)
- Anthony Head (Talking Little Britain.)
- Harry Hill (Arm wrestling with Russell Howard.)
And that's it for another year.
