Rory Bremner may be new Countdown host

Friday 25th July 2008, 5:07am

Impressionist and satirist Rory Bremner is currently one of the favourites to be tipped as the new host of Channel 4 quiz show Countdown.

Bremner, a regular on Channel 4 with his satirical series Bremner, Bird and Fortune is being reported as a likely choice for the role, after the recent decision by current host Des O'Connor to quit after the current series finishes.

Other people currently in the line for the job include singer and host of Songs of Praise Aled Jones, former Antiques Roadshow host Michael Aspel, and ex-MP and HIGNFY guest Gyles Brandreth. Aspel and Brandreth have both appeared on the programme before in the show's 'Dictionary Corner', a place where Brandreth eventually became known for his odd taste in jumpers.

There is currently much speculation on the internet as to who will be the next host, with all kinds of rumours circulating. One of the more unlikely rumours is that David Mitchell will be the next host.

Countdown is the longest-running show on Channel 4. It was the first programme to be broadcast on the channel when it launched at 4.45pm on Tuesday 2nd November 1982.
