Comedy videos launch C4's online careers project

Monday 14th July 2008, 8:07am

At 6pm tonight Channel 4 is launching a new comedy project online, with the aim being to help teenagers find out more about their chosen careers.

The Insiders, which will be making extensive use of comedy videos to get messages across to its target audience, is being billed as a website that will tell students the "stuff that your careers teacher won't tell you". Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, The Insiders aims to provide an upfront, funny and honest account of the world of work.

Channel 4 has recruited veteran scriptwriter Roger Drew to fictionalise and add a comedy spin to the professional lives of a doctor, teacher, policeman, actress, fashion assistant and musician for the project. His scripts are reportedly based on the real-life diaries of six professionals.

Drew's previous writing credits include The 11 O'Clock Show, Monkey Dust, Time Trumpet, The Omid Djalili Show and Moving Wallpaper.

Matt Locke, Channel 4's commissioner for new media education says the project is mainly aimed at sixth form students: "Lots of teens get career information but they want to know the struggles and the daily grind of jobs. The comedy angle is for people who haven't already made up their minds, and is not trying to replace the hundreds of sites out there where they can find career information."
