Picking up the prize for Best Comedy Performance, James Corden thanked Gavin & Stacey co-writer Ruth Jones, who also plays Nessa in the show. He said: "She is not just the greatest writer and actress, she is the best friend anyone could hope for and is as much Smithy as I am, and I share this with her".

On accepting the audience award, Jones said she was "absolutely gobsmacked". She added: "We didn't think at all that we were going to win this. Gavin and Stacey really seems to have been taken into people's hearts and we're really thrilled about it."

Incidently the second series of Gavin and Stacey finished tonight on BBC Three. Talking on the red carpet at the start of the evening Corden said he and Jones were working on a Christmas special, but they did not yet know if a third series would be made. He said: "We can only really make a third series if we think it's going to be better than the first two. We only really want to make one if we know we have got a story that's worth telling."
