Stephen Fry and Matt Lucas making Radio 4 tribute

Thursday 30th August 2007, 6:08am

QI host Stephen Fry and Little Britain star Matt Lucas are teaming up to make a one-off radio comedy special to celebrate the 40th birthday of BBC Radio 4.

According to MediaGuardian the show, recorded live in front of an audience at the newly refurbished Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House, features Fry as the narrator and Lucas as "Radio 4" and traces the history of the station from 1967 to the present day.

The one-off show, titled Radio 4: This Is Your Life, is described as an "irreverent satirical romp which takes affectionate digs at some of Radio 4's longest-running shows, including Today and The Archers."

The tribute has been written by the talent behind some of the station's most popular comedies: Dead Ringers, The News Quiz and The Now Show. The writers include Bill Dare, John Finnemore, Nev Fountain, Jon Holmes and Tom Jamieson. Appearing alongside Fry and Lucas will be Sue Perkins, Michael Fenton Stevens, Dave Lamb and Richie Webb whilst Radio 4 stalwarts including John Humphrys, Sue Lawley, Jonathan Dimbleby, Barry Cryer, James Naughtie and Martin Jarvis will also feature.

Radio 4: This Is Your Life will air on the 30th September as part of a series of programmes marking the station's 40th anniversary, exactly 40 years after it launched on the 30th September 1967.

BBC Radio, and Radio 4 in particular, is widely acknowledged as having developed some of Britain's most popular comedies. Little Britain, The League of Gentlemen, Goodness Gracious Me, Hancock's Half-Hour, Dead Ringers and many other comedies have gone on to be successful TV shows whilst others like I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue and The Now Show have notched up hundreds of episodes on Radio 4 to date and are still entertaining large audiences.
