Tate says BAFTAs are unfair

Saturday 26th May 2007, 9:05am

Catherine Tate would appear to be a bad loser. The comedienne has claimed that the BAFTAs are unfair, after losing out for the third time. Tate is angry, claiming that the choices do not reflect those of the British public.

She told the Daily Mirror: "I don't like to use the word 'fixed' but it should be fair. Only 10 people vote but have they asked the nation? I've lost three times!"

The BAFTAs are judged in several stages. In the first round, members of the academy vote online, but the final choices are decided by a jury of nine people, which tries to fairly balanced between age, sex, experience, ethnicity and in broadcasting allegiances. The people judging also have a distinct record in the genre they vote for, and must not have a direct association with any of the programmes shortlisted.

On the night, The Catherine Tate Show lost out to That Mitchell and Webb Look for the Best Comedy Programme award. As Barbara Windsor announced the result, TV cameras clearly captured Tate looking upset. A clip on YouTube just captures this look.
