Dibley tops Christmas TV

Tuesday 26th December 2006, 9:12am

The Handsome Stranger, the new Vicar of Dibley Christmas special, was the most watched TV programme on Christmas Day according to the overnight estimates from the Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB).

The BBC1 sitcom was watched by an impressive 11.4m viewers - 70,000 more than watched the much promoted Eastenders special. The BBC will no doubt be very pleased with the performance of Richard Curtis' comedy as they have another special episode of the sitcom (tipped to be the final ever episode of The Vicar of Dibley) lined up for New Year's Day.

The scheduling of the My Family and Green Green Grass Christmas specials early in the day meant these new episodes did not make it into the day's competitive Top 10. "Little Britain Abroad", which followed The Vicar of Dibley did though, it was watched by 8.4m.

The day's Top 10 was as follows:

  1. The Vicar of Dibley (11.4m)
  2. EastEnders part two (10.7m)
  3. Coronation Street (9.6m)
  4. EastEnders part one (9.2m)
  5. Doctor Who (8.7m)
  6. Little Britain Abroad (8.4m)
  7. The Queen's Christmas Message (7.6m)
  8. Strictly Come Dancing Special (7.3m)
  9. Emmerdale (7.2m)
  10. Strictly Come Dancing Preview (6.8m)
