  • Red Dwarf co-creator Rob Grant has revealed he is working on a prequel called Red Dwarf: Titan
  • The story will focus on Young Rimmer and Young Lister, however few other details about the project have been revealed
  • Grant commented: "I can't say too much, but it's a prequel and we're very excited about it. Hopefully we'll see it soon!"

A prequel to Red Dwarf is currently in development, co-creator Rob Grant has revealed. However, few other details about the project - currently titled Red Dwarf: Titan - are known.

The news was revealed at a Q&A session at the BFI at the weekend involving time travel comedies. Red Dwarf fansite Ganymede & Titan reports: "A short sizzle reel was screened, for a project to be called Red Dwarf: Titan, written by Rob Grant and Andrew Marshall - Rob's recent writing partner on [radio comedies] Quanderhorn and The Nether Regions.

"This would be a prequel to Red Dwarf, apparently featuring Young Rimmer and Young Lister, named for Saturn's moon of Titan. It felt like it would occupy a similar space of the first section of Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers [the 1989 novel] while perhaps being a little more adventure-focused. No further information was provided. It's not even clear whether it would be a TV series or perhaps a radio thing. It could even be a book or a comic."

Speaking to Radio Times after the event, Grant commented: "I can't say too much, but it's a prequel and we're very excited about it. Hopefully we'll see it soon!"

The news follows the recent settling of a legal dispute between Grant and co-creator Doug Naylor. The statement said at the time: "Moving onwards and upwards, Rob and Doug hope to launch separate iterations of Red Dwarf across various media, working again with the cast and other valued partners, and wish each other the very best. Smoke a kipper, Red Dwarf will be back for breakfast!!"

The TV version of Red Dwarf launched in 1988. The most recent episode was the 2020 special on Dave, titled The Promised Land.
