Michael Spicer and Adam Kay amongst Writers' Guild Award winners

The Writers' Guild Of Great Britain Awards 2023 winners were announced on Monday night (16th January), with a number of comedy writers amongst those picking up trophies.

Best Online Comedy: Michael Spicer

The Best Online Comedy accolade went to Michael Spicer for The Room Next Door - Boris Johnson Resignation Speech. The award was presented to him by Josie Lawrence.

The other nominees in this category were Kieran Murphy for Hostage Negotiation and Eleanor Morton for Mary Shelley Writes Frankenstein.

Best Radio Comedy: David Quantick

Spicer presented David Quantick the Best Radio Comedy trophy for Whatever Happened To Baby Jane Austen?, his Radio 4 series that stars French & Saunders.

The other nominees were Jan Etherington for Conversations From A Long Marriage and Chris Neill for Raging Enigma.

Best TV Situation Comedy: Jack Rooke

Big Boys creator Jack Rooke was presented with the award for Best TV Situation Comedy by Maurice Gran. His Channel 4 university-based sitcom, which stars Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing, is due to return for a second series.

The other sitcom nominees were Anna Costello for Dead Canny and Lisa McGee for Derry Girls.

Best Long Form TV Drama: Adam Kay

This Is Going To Hurt writer Adam Kay was awarded first place in the Best Long Form TV Drama category for his medical comedy drama based on his memoirs of the same name. The award was presented by Helen Lederer and collected on his behalf by James Kay.

Best Children's TV Episode: Rhys Thomas and Lucy Montgomery

Best Children's TV Episode went to Rhys Thomas and Lucy Montgomery for Episode 9 of Dodger, the CBBC comedy drama set in 1830s Dickensian London.


In total 15 awards spanning film, television, radio, theatre, comedy, books, and videogames were presented at the ceremony, which took place at the Royal College of Physicians in London. The night was hosted for the first time by Rachel Parris, with WGGB President Sandi Toksvig rounding off the ceremony with a closing speech congratulating this year's worthy winners.
