Foster's to sponsor Edinburgh Comedy Awards

Edinburgh Comedy Award

The comedy awards at this year's Edinburgh Festival will be sponsored by Foster's, following a lengthy period of uncertainty. Previous sponsor Intelligent Finance pulled out of their deal in early 2009, leaving thousands of pounds worth of prize money at last year's event to be funded personally by the Awards' director, Nica Burns. The Foster's deal, announced today, will see the brand committed to the awards for at least 3 years.

The new sponsorship deal will also involve the re-establishment of a London season as well as support in touring for all those nominated. The best show winner will also be sent to Montreal's Just For Laughs festival.

Still best known by the name of the Perrier Awards (after long-term sponsor Perrier mineral water up until 2005), the Edinburgh Comedy Awards will this year offer cash of £10,000 for the Best Comedy Show winner, and £5,000 each for the Best Newcomer and Best Panel prizes.

Last year, Tim Key won the main award, with Jonny Sweet named Best Newcomer (story). The winners of the 30th Edinburgh Comedy Awards will be announced at the end of this year's Fringe on 28th August, following the nomination announcements on the 25th.

In a recent separate deal, Foster's announced it would be sponsoring original comedy on Channel 4.
