The David Nobbs Memorial Trust launches
- The David Nobbs Memorial Trust has launched, in memory of the Reginald Perrin comedy writer
- Supporters of the Trust include Barry Cryer and Michael Palin
- The Trust is undertaking a fundraising drive so it can launch a comedy development scheme
The David Nobbs Memorial Trust, which has been set up in memory of the late comedy writer, has launched a comedy development scheme.
The Trust explains: "He created some of the most fondly remembered characters and best know catchphrases in comedy and now a fund is being created in the name of David Nobbs to help comedy writers at the beginning of their career."
Nobbs, who wrote comedy novels, radio and TV shows, including The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin, died in August 2015.
The David Nobbs Memorial Trust has been established by comedy producers, performers and people who knew and loved David, with the blessing of his family, to honour his memory by supporting new comedy writing in the UK. The organisation has Susan Nobbs as its honorary president, with its supporters including Barry Cryer and Michael Palin.
The Trust plans to raise sufficient funds from amongst both the comedy community and wider public to run an annual comedy writing competition featuring cash bursary prizes.
Trust chair, journalist Mary O'Hara, explains: "Getting a foothold as a writer - be it in sketch, book writing or sitcom - can be tough so we've decided to try to help those starting out. Our plan is to run a competition in David's name and award a modest bursary that could help winners set aside some precious hours for writing."
Michael Palin says: "I knew David Nobbs from the very earliest days - when we were both struggling comedy writers. Throughout my subsequent career David was extraordinarily helpful and supportive. I'm delighted, through his name, to continue his help and support for new writing talent."
The trust has opened an online appeal for donations, large or small. Provided enough donations are made, it plans to launch its first competition in the Autumn aimed at new entrants to professional comedy writing. Further details on how to enter and the guidelines of the competition will be announced in the Autumn.
