Brighton Comedy Festival launches new competition

Brighton Comedy Festival

The Brighton Comedy Festival have announced a new competition. The Squawker Award - presumably named in relation seagulls - is aiming to reward a relatively new comedian or group for their hard work and skill. The winner will receive a cash prize, as well as a spot at one of the Festival's 'Best of the Fest' line up shows.

The competition is open to all genres of comedy, thus stand-up comics, sketch groups, musical comedians, and those operating in other genres are all welcomed.

The organisers of the festival have teamed up with Komedia and Jill Edwards Comedy Workshops/Comic Boom to setup The Squawker Award. They say: "For over a decade the Brighton Comedy Festival has presented the very cream of the comedy crop, and now we are taking a moment to focus on the seedlings if you will."

There will be a series of heats presented in Brighton through September, culminating in the Final which will be held at Komedia during the Brighton Comedy Festival in October.
Before people sign up, the organisers are asking them the following questions...

- Have you been doing this for less than 3 years?

- Are you gigging a bit, but not really scoring the paid 20s?

- Are you without a telly or radio contract?

- Do you have 5 - 7 mins of original material and are you over 18?

If you can answer 'yes' to all four of the questions, then you are eligible to enter the competition. Registration is open till the 27th July 2012.
