Justin Edwards hosts Chat Show Roulette

Justin Edwards

Justin Edwards (pictured) is trying out a new comedy format next week at The Soho Theatre. If successful, the hopes are it could be turned into a TV or radio show.

Chat Show Roulette, which is being overseen by John Stanley Productions, is billed as offering "a whole new take on improvised character comedy." The format is like a traditional chat show, but the twist is that the guests are all comedy performers who are playing characters... plus, they don't know who they are going to be until just seconds before sitting down.

The name and profession of each character will be selected randomly from bowls of audience suggestions, and the performers will then just have to go with it. Extra curveballs are expected to be thrown along the way too as Edwards introduces more facets of the guests' pasts via the suggestion bowls.

The show is being trialed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week (26th - 28th June) with a variety of performers...

Humphrey Ker (Fast & Loose), Simon Day (The Fast Show), Phil Whelans (My First Planet) and Katherine Jakeways (North By Northamptonshire) will be appearing on Tuesday.

Wednesday's show is already sold out, which isn't a surprise as the line-up features the star names of Matt Lucas and Julia Davis, plus expert character actor Marc Wootton (La La Land).

For the final show on Thursday, the line-up will feature Katy Brand, Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Adam Riches and I'm Alan Partridge star David Schneider.

Ashley Blaker, the show's producer, tells us: "We're really excited about it and think it will be a lot of fun, although no doubt nerve-wracking at first for the performers. Thankfully we've got a really amazing line-up of people who have agreed to give it a try."
