  • Operation Mincemeat will open on Broadway, at the Golden Theatre from February 2025
  • The comedy musical - which has clocked up 74 five-star reviews - will run simultaneously in London until at least March 2025
  • The creators say the American transfer is "beyond our wildest dreams"

The multi award-winning comedy musical Operation Mincemeat is to open on Broadway.

The hit stage show will launch in New York at the Golden Theatre on 20th March 2025, with previews from 15th February. It will be the first time the US venue has hosted a musical since it ran with Avenue Q in 2003, which went on to become a Tony Award Triple Crown winner.

Operation Mincemeat, which is based on the true story of a 1943 military plot to fool the German army, has picked up 74 five-star reviews so far in London, making it the best reviewed show in West End history. The show has, so far, sold over 300,000 tickets during its West End run, with many fans attending multiple times. One audience member has set a record by attending over 140 times.

Created by David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts (known as musical comedy troupe SpitLip), Operation Mincemeat started in 2019. Following runs at the New Diorama Theatre, Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios, it launched in the West End at Fortune Theatre in March 2023, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

The show recently received an "incredible 10th extension", meaning it will now be in London until at least 8th March 2025.

Operation Mincemeat will run simultaneously in New York and London, with the cast for the American version set to be announced in due course.

Talking about SpitLip and the show's development, the producers explain: "The decision to write the musical was the last roll of the dice after years of performing sketch shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and echoes the journey of Beyond The Fringe from the world-famous quartet Alan Bennett, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller and Dudley Moore, which premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1960, before moving to the Fortune Theatre and later to the Golden in 1962."

The SpitLip quartet say: "If we had to name one single unifying influence for Operation Mincemeat, it would be the American Musical Comedy. The Producers, Guys and Dolls, Wicked, Avenue Q, The Book Of Mormon - we never dreamed we would even get to go see shows like these on Broadway, let alone open our show alongside them. Thank you to our fans, and particularly those in the US for getting Operation Mincemeat here. If it gets hounded out of Broadway after one night, it will still be beyond our wildest dreams. Our producers, we'd imagine, would be less pleased."
