It's been confirmed that a stage show musical version of 1990s kids TV classic Maid Marian And Her Merry Men is coming in 2024.
A workshop for Maid Marian And Her Merry Men: A New Musical* (*sort of) will take place at London's Soho Theatre on 25th January, in anticipation for a UK premiere later in the year.
Creator Sir Tony Robinson first revealed plans for a stage show in 2018. It's now been confirmed that musical comedian Vikki Stone has written a script, with Benji Sperring (An Act Of God) signed up to direct.
Stone will play The Sheriff of Nottingham in the workshop, with Bronté Barbé (Kathy and Stella Solve a Murder) cast as Maid Marian.
Comedian Nick Helm will play King John, and sitcom star Marek Larwood takes on the role of Rabies.
The cast list also features Myles Miller (The Carole King Musical) as Robin Hood, Damien James (The Play That Goes Wrong) as Barrington, Marc Pickering (Bleak Expectations) as Little Ron, Michelle Bishop (Cabaret) as Gary, and Natasha Lewis (The Boy In The Dress) as Graham.
Vikki Stone says: "I cannot tell you how delighted I am to be writing Maid Marian. It was one of my absolute favourite kids TV shows in the 90s, and I couldn't be more excited to be working with comedy legend Sir Tony Robinson on this wonderful show."
Produced by Thomas Hopkins, Guy Chapman and John Rogerson, further plans for the production will be revealed in due course.
Maid Marian And Her Merry Men quickly became a favourite amongst both children and adults when it debuted on BBC One in 1989, and retains cult status. The original sitcom's cast comprised of Kate Lonergan in the titular role, with Adam Morris as Robin, Danny John-Jules as Barrington, Mike Edmonds as Little Ron, and Howard Lew Lewis as Rabies.
In 2020, British Comedy Guide reported that Robinson was also in talk with Netflix to bring the format back to screens, however there has been no update since then on any TV plans.
Tony Robinson spoke at length to British Comedy Guide late in 2016 about the series, which is available to own as a complete DVD box set.
