2022 Edinburgh Fringe
Sam Campbell's mysterious Fringe poster
The standard template for a poster to advertise a comedy show is a picture of the comedian in question, some press quotes, and the venue and time the show is on.
Sam Campbell, who is set to perform a late night show in the second half of the festival, has decided to just use a picture as his poster though. No words are on the billboard at all, and it's not a current image of himself he's selected at that.
TV viewers will know Campbell as paramedic Darrell in the sitcom Bloods, but they might not recognise him in the poster that is on Cowgate street, it being a snap taken in an Edinburgh bar when he was starting out in comedy.
A good poster should get people talking though, and this is certainly one that is doing that. Some people are asking 'who are those two people and why does this poster not tell me anything about them?', meanwhile those who work behind-the-scenes in comedy are laughing at Campbell's selection of an image which shows himself with Steve Bennett, the editor of comedy website Chortle. Is he hoping for a good review from the critic? We can only guess at his exact motivation.
As far as we know, there is just the one poster. You can see it in person down the bottom end of Cowgate, near where it connects to the road heading up to the Pleasance Courtyard.
Given the poster doesn't give away any of the details, we'll tell you that Sam Campbell: Comedy Show is at Monkey Barrel at 12:05am from the 15 to 28 August. EdFringe.com
