MESSY FRIENDS deliver an explosion of colour and costumes
MESSY FRIENDS - an explosion of colour and costumes - won the Best Overall Cabaret award at the Adelaide Fringe earlier this year. Now, they're bringing their uber-alternative style of drag to the Fringe. Unlike anything you've seen before, this is a variety show presenting fan-favourite lip syncs, burlesque and dance, coupled with revealing documentary style videos and wild costumes.
Can you sum up MESSY FRIENDS using 5 words, or 5 emojis - your choice.
5 words or emojis? You know we are queer, a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and performers, right? We could never talk about ourselves in a limited capacity, as we are freaking fabulous, but here it goes:
5 emojis: 😱🔥💃🎥💔
5 words: Drag-u-mentary, Uber-alternative, Kaleidoscopic, Thought-provoking, Empowering.
What's the most outrageous costume featured in MESSY FRIENDS?
OMGosh how do we become minimalists with this show! I think it would be a strong draw between a giant purple monster that vomits glitter, or the blue and pink dinosaurs with eyes on their hands dancing to Busta Rhymes, or maybe the dresses made out of real family X-rays. Why don't you come along and be the official decision makers on this one! ;)
Can you share a fun/memorable behind-the-scenes moment from preparing for MESSY FRIENDS at the Fringe?
The backstage chaos, hidden from the audience, often brings plenty of laughs. Picture flying masks, sweaty costumes being peeled off, and lips and lashes being tossed around - it's a whirlwind of energy and excitement.
What makes our show special is the peek behind the curtain that we offer. You get to see the meticulous preparation and the creative influences that shape each performer's role. It's a unique behind-the-scenes experience that adds depth to what you'll witness on stage. I won't give away too much to spoil the surprise, but suffice it to say, it's a journey into the heart of our creative process that you won't soon forget.
If you could assemble a super drag dream team of performers for one ultimate show, who would you pick and why?
Lypsinka - an inspiration to all spoken word queens!
Kween Kong - a powerhouse performer with such commanding stage presence.
Jinx Monsoon - the singing, the comedy, the acting!
Sasha Velour - their artistry is truly one of a kind.
Lawrence Chaney - the ultimate Scottish diva!
OK, time for a lightning round...
Are these trick questions, asking for a friend? ;)
Glitter or sequins?
Sequins.
Lin syncing or live singing?
Lip Syncing.
Heels or flats?
Heels.
Comedy or draaaama?
Oh both, for sure!
