Pierre Novellie is struggling to just enjoy things
In his latest Fringe show, Pierre Novellie looks into why he can't just enjoy things. It's observational comedy for people who think they hate observational comedy.
Tell us about your show, including how you came up with the title?
It's called Why Can't I Just Enjoy Things? because that is a question I was sincerely asking myself back in late 2019 and early 2020 when I chose it and have continued to ask. Essentially, I explore why I seem to enjoy things less or at the wrong level to other people and always have.
What are you looking forward to most about coming back to the Fringe?
I suppose the chance to check back in with the world for the first time since covid hit but mainly it's a very social month with stand-up colleagues, which is good fun.
What other shows are you most looking forward to seeing?
I've been lucky enough to see a lot of my "target" shows in preview - great acts like Glenn Moore, Sara Barron, Alex Kealy, Garrett Millerick - but there are a LOT of heavyweight debut shows this year too.
What was the moment that you knew comedy was for you?
I'll let you know.
What does there need to be more of in comedy/at the Fringe?
Pay that increases with inflation or, indeed, increases at all. The Monkey Barrel comedy club is the fairest model for performers and a fabulously run venue; more of that, please.
What does there need to be less of/at the Fringe?
Rent gouging.
What's the joke or quote that you live by?
"Too much concern about how well one is doing in a task sometimes disrupts performance by loading short-term memory with pointless anxious thoughts" - Daniel Kahneman.
