2019 Edinburgh Fringe

Jojo Sutherland talks about her new solo show interview

Jojo Sutherland

Jojo Sutherland is back at the Fringe with a new show. Let's find out more...

Hi Jojo. If you had to guess at how many comedy shows you've performed now, what number would you go for?

I'd guess a couple, but it's probably more! Much the same as when I'm asked how long I've been a stand-up, I say 'a couple of years' but apparently it's 17! I'm shit with numbers... and time.

2019 will be your first solo Edinburgh Fringe show in five years though?

Yes it is - I've been busy with other things!

The premise of this year's show sounds really interesting indeed. You're going to talk about how, aged 14, your family moved from a castle to caravan?!?

I don't know how many people have lived in a caravan after living in a castle but there was barely any room for the tapestries!

Ha ha. With a story like that, why have you waited till now to talk about it in detail on stage?

Ah, that's the thing, I have spoken about it before in a show and onstage but this show is more about how life would be if I still lived in a castle and if recent experiences would have happened the same way - something happened in 2015 which you will only find out about if you come to see my show or if somebody grasses.

Ohhh. It looks like you're going to have a very busy festival. Your stand-up show isn't the only hour you're doing each day?!

I am genuinely delighted to be working alongside Jay Lafferty, Paul Sneddon and Keir McAllister again in a new play written by Keir called Madame George - 1pm every day at Gilded Balloon Patter Hoose.

I'm also performing with my comedy conspirator Susan Morrison in our free-form double act The Fanny's, every day at The Stand 6.20pm.

You're a stand-up director and tutor as well as a performer. Are you very critical/analytic of your own performances as a result?

I'm not sure that I am, it's easier to analyse from the outside and ask any comic to be critical of themselves is like asking the sun to stop rising - we can find any kind of excuse for why a gig or gag went wrong and being critical of ourselves will be the last resort

Could you offer any tips for those just starting out in comedy?

Get up and do it, enjoy it and never take it for granted, comedy will look after you if you look after it.
