Brodi Snook on dating apps and being a 'chill girl' interview

Brodi Snook

Australian comedian Brodi Snook will be performing her hotly anticipated Edinburgh debut this August. Her show is inspired by the time that she went on a first date and was called a 'handful' within the first five minutes...

Do you think that you are a handful?

I have been asked to tone it the fuck down, yes. As I understand it, a 'handful' is defined as a problem, nuisance, woman who speaks etc. No one has ever told a dude to pipe down for being too feisty. From my research, most women have reported that their experiences with this word have been negative, so I am trying to reclaim the term and its connotations.

What's your worst dating app experience?

I believe the worst part of the experience are the actual apps themselves. There appear to be millions of what is not unfair to call 'the dregs of humanity' to wade through when searching for one's next shag/date/lifelong committed relationship.

I have an idea for a technological advance in the dating app world that I need a sexy billionaire to invest a few spondulix in. It will better the lives of single people everywhere. Come to my show if you carry a briefcase and are DTF (down to finance).

What advice do you have for someone trying to pick themselves up after a bad date?

Do anything that comes under the umbrella of 'self-care'. Eat your feelings in bed, spend delusional hours Googling your star-sign and the star-sign of your date, drink the label-less cooking wine that's been in your cupboard for two years, have a bath in hot bleach, tweeze your ingrown hairs in dim lighting, scream into a Keep Calm And Carry On pillow, but for God's sake DO NOT maturely self-reflect, turn your phone off and get a good night's sleep.

You describe yourself as 'the chill girl,' what are the highs and lows of this label?

I was brought up in a no-nonsense environment which meant no kicking, no screaming, no protest songs. It has made me cooperative and nice to work with and pleasant to be around but the downside is I can be a bit easily walked all over.

My most uttered phrase is 'that's cool, no worries' when in fact I am seething with rage or injustice. Last year I fractured my hand after punching a wall which was not very 'chill girl' of me. Being overly compliant out of politeness or fear can be a very female trait and the genuine danger of this is something I explore within my show- with HILARIOUS consequences of course, like attempting foreplay using only my left hand.

What should people be most excited about for your performance?

All the secrets! Seriously, there are a tonne of things in this show that I have absolutely no business in saying out loud to strangers, but how else will I make friends and/or money?

My show is a virtual conveyer belt of bare-all stories, celebrations of flaws and small-town, big-idiot opinions that do not get me laid. It is hilarious, heartfelt at times and hostile as hell. Come along if you don't have a Fred Perry shirt or a moral high ground.
