2018 Edinburgh Fringe
Ulster American
Jay is the Oscar-winning actor taking the lead in a play that connects with his Irish roots. Leigh is the ambitious director who will do anything to get noticed. And Ruth is the Northern Irish playwright whose voice must be heard. The stage is set for great success but when the three meet, a line is crossed, and the heated discussion quickly escalates to a violent climax. Exploring consent, abuses of power and the confusions of cultural identity, Ulster American by David Ireland (Cyprus Avenue) is confrontational, brutally funny and not for the faint of heart.

The Austrian playwright Peter Handke once wrote a play called Offending the Audience, which was designed to do just that. The history of British theatre includes many plays to which the audience - and critics too - have taken offence, because they felt they were gratuitously violent or included moments that should be neither seen nor heard on stage.
