If British comedy has a soul, it resides in Edinburgh. The wet streets, overheated rooms and frantic commercial business of the Fringe can blind you to this -- you can forget that Alan Bennett, Peter Cook, most of Monty Python, Rowan Atkinson, Tom Stoppard, Stephen Fry, The League of Gentlemen, Ricky Gervais and almost every comedian you've heard of kick-started their career right here. None, however, has started as spectacularly as John Kearns.
